Sonibel’s new in-situ acoustic process monitoring system for arc welding uses machine learning to alert welders of quality anomalies, including porosity, incomplete penetration, lack of fusion, and slag inclusions as the defect forms so they can be corrected for higher first-time yield.
Catching weld defects as they form, before NDT starts, provides an in-process pre-NDT quality gate, enabling welders to identify and rework defects before NDT. This increases first pass yield, reduces rework and re-inspection cycles, decreases schedule impacts and unplanned work, and improves production throughput.
